Modern Rituals: Reimagining Care, Craft, and Connection Through Matcha

tea field in Japan

There is a quiet philosophy in Japan called Ichi-go Ichi-e, the idea that every moment, every encounter, happens only once and will never be repeated in exactly the same way.

It’s a simple concept, but it has shaped how I see the world: to be present, to appreciate what’s in front of you, and to treat even the smallest moments with care and intention.

There is a quiet moment I return to often.

It’s early morning in Miyazaki, where I was born and raised. The air is soft, almost suspended. Wind moves gently across the tea fields, each leaf catching light in its own time.

But I wasn’t always still in those moments.

I was running through tea gardens and rice fields, collecting whatever I could find, bugs, leaves, fish, frogs, flowers. Always outside, always moving, sketching what I saw. I didn’t think of it as anything special. I was just curious, trying to understand the world around me.

Looking back, those moments shaped everything. Even then, I was living inside fleeting experiences, fully present, moving from one discovery to the next, never thinking to hold onto them.

Only now do I have language for what I was learning without knowing it. Ichi-go Ichi-e is the reminder that every moment is unrepeatable. It asks us to be fully here, grateful, attentive, awake to what is right in front of us.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose that sense of “now.” But I believe ritual has the power to bring us back.

With Matcha Rio, I wanted to take the ancient art of matcha and reimagine it as a modern ritual, something vibrant, creative, and deeply nourishing that fits into everyday life.

Tea was never just something we drank. It was something we lived alongside: care, nature, and craft existing in the same breath.

As I began building David Rio in San Francisco, I realized how rare that kind of connection has become, and how deeply people still long for it.

We talk a lot about innovation in beverages, new formats, new flavors, and new systems. I believe in that progress. But I also believe the next wave of innovation is not just about what we create, but how we make people feel.

This is where modern rituals begin.

Ritual as a Form of Care

Ritual doesn’t have to be elaborate. At its core, it’s simply an act done with intention.

It’s the way a barista pauses before handing off a drink. It’s the consistency a customer comes to rely on. It’s the quiet confidence that what you’re serving has been crafted with care.

In Japan, we have a philosophy called omotenashi. It’s often translated as hospitality, but it goes deeper. It’s about anticipating needs before they are spoken and offering care without expectation of return. It’s about respect for the guest, the craft, and the moment itself.

For me, omotenashi and Ichi-go Ichi-e are deeply connected. One is about how we serve, and the other is about how we experience. Together, they create a mindset to show up fully, to care deeply, and to recognize that even the smallest interaction holds meaning.

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose touch with the “now.” We move quickly, often without noticing the details that make a moment feel complete.

But I believe ritual has the power to change that.

Even something as simple as preparing matcha can become a pause with an energetic, mindful moment that grounds you, fuels you, and sparks creativity.

That belief became the foundation for Matcha Rio, where we are taking something deeply traditional and reimagining it as a modern ritual. Something vibrant, creative, and deeply nourishing that fits into the rhythm of everyday life.

Listening First, Then Creating

Matcha Rio began with listening.  Over the past several years, we’ve watched matcha evolve from a niche offering to a central part of café menus. But alongside that growth, we kept hearing the same challenges: operators wanted authenticity but struggled with consistency, baristas wanted flexibility without complexity, and customers wanted cleaner, better ingredients.

There was a gap between tradition and modern service, and I felt a responsibility to help bridge that gap.

Matcha Rio is our response. It’s built on the art of service, designed to meet real needs while honoring what matcha truly is.

A Journey Back to the Source

To create something meaningful, I knew I had to go back home.

Sourcing for Matcha Rio was a long and intentional journey. I traveled across Japan, reconnecting with tea regions and meeting producers who have spent generations refining their craft.

And there is something many people don’t see, which is the time behind it all.

High-grade matcha asks for patience in a way that feels almost rare today. Leaves are carefully shaded, harvested with intention, and slowly stone-ground to preserve their integrity. It can take years, even generations, to refine this process.

Witnessing it again as an adult, I felt a deep sense of respect. It reminded me that when something is cared for over time, you can feel it in the final experience.

That became a guiding principle for Matcha Rio.

You begin to understand that matcha is not just about taste. It’s about lineage, discipline, and honoring the land and the people who care for it.

During my sourcing journey for Matcha Rio, I returned to tea ceremonies from my childhood that brought back nostalgia and familiarity, yet felt entirely transformed in meaning. Every movement, every detail, every pause carries meaning. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is wasted.

That perspective shaped every decision we made, and why in turn, this line feels so personal to me.

Three Expressions of One Philosophy

Matcha Rio is designed to meet people where they are, without losing integrity.

Each offering reflects a different expression of care:

  • Barista Blend is a traditional, ceremonial-grade, unsweetened matcha designed for creativity and control.

  • Frappe Blend offers a more indulgent experience that is smooth, slightly sweet, and approachable for iced and blended beverages.

  • Superfood Matcha reflects growing demand for functional, better-for-you beverages, delivering both flavor and added benefits.

Together, they create a system of service that allows cafés to deliver quality and consistency with ease, while giving customers an experience that feels both intentional and effortless.

Designing with Heart

The storytelling didn’t stop at the product.

As the creative director of David Rio, I wanted the Matcha Rio packaging to carry the same level of intention as what’s inside. This was an opportunity to express not just a brand but a piece of my identity.

The logo is inspired by my family crest, which features a tea leaf. It’s a symbol that connects my heritage directly to this work. It reminds me, every day, why this line matters.

I also hand-painted key elements, including the central figure of a Japanese woman who represents both tradition and evolution. Each detail was created with intention, bringing warmth, artistry, and cohesion to the full line.

Because even packaging can create a moment of connection.

A Final Note from Creative Director, Rio

Matcha has been in my life for as long as I can remember. But over time, I’ve come to understand it not just as a tradition, but as something much more alive.

To me, it’s never been just a drink; it’s something that connects people, sparks ideas, and brings energy into the moment.

Having spent years building David Rio in San Francisco, a city that thrives on bold creativity and constant evolution, I felt a strong pull to share my roots in a way that reflects both where I come from and where we are today.

That’s what Matcha Rio represents.

The idea of Ichi-go Ichi-e reminds me that this exact moment is something we will never experience again. There is only one chance to fully be in it, to create something meaningful from it.

That’s why I believe even something as simple as making matcha can become a powerful ritual. It’s a chance to pause, to create, and to bring intention into your day.

I’m incredibly proud to bring this to life for people who want to live with energy, create freely, and truly enjoy each moment as it comes.

Let’s make every sip count!
